The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said on September 22, 2026 that President Bola Tinubu should either be in Nigeria addressing security and economic hardship or attend the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York where Vice President Kashim Shettima is representing Nigeria. PDP National Publicity Secretary Ini Ememobong stated the President’s continued absence comes at a difficult time for Nigerians facing insecurity, economic hardship and a growing sense of hopelessness.

The party argued Tinubu’s decision to remain on vacation in Europe is hard to reconcile with the country’s challenges and said Nigerians have the right to question how he is carrying out his presidential responsibilities. PDP reminded citizens to consider this issue when voting in the January 2027 presidential election, stressing the need for a leader ready to work both locally and internationally.

Meanwhile, the Presidency said Tinubu’s absence from the UNGA would not affect Nigeria’s participation at the global gathering. With Nigerians facing insecurity, economic hardship and hopelessness, will you weigh a leader’s physical presence and international engagement as part of your assessment for the next election?
