The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) re-elected its National Working Committee (NWC) on Sunday through a consensus process at a national convention of the faction loyal to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike. Over 2,000 delegates from all 36 states and the FCT endorsed the 22-member NWC, which will steer the party for four years. Abdulrahman Mohammed retained the National Chairman role, with Samuel Anyanwu as National Secretary and Aaron Chukwuemeka as Deputy National Chairman (South). Other key positions were filled across the party's structure.

The consensus election followed a motion by House Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda and was preceded by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan's motion to dissolve the previous NWC and ratify state congresses. However, the development occurs amid ongoing factional disputes. A rival faction led by Kabiru Turaki filed a Supreme Court case on Friday to restrain the Wike-aligned faction from holding the convention. This comes after the Court of Appeal invalidated Turaki's NWC, which had been formed in November 2024 in Ibadan.

Party leaders described the consensus process as reflecting a united front aimed at fostering cohesion and repositioning the PDP as a formidable opposition ahead of the 2027 elections. In his acceptance speech, Chairman Mohammed committed to unifying members and advancing the party. The new NWC faces the immediate task of reconciliation efforts while navigating unresolved legal challenges from the rival faction.

For political observers and PDP members, this moment tests whether a consensus-driven leadership can genuinely heal internal divisions when a significant faction continues to contest its legitimacy in court. Does this unity signal a real shift, or is it a temporary arrangement until the next legal showdown?
