PenCom pushes deeper capital market ties as pension assets hit record N31.32tn
PenCom DG Omolola Oloworaran announced plans to deepen engagement with Nigeria's capital market to unlock pension funds' passive savings, speaking at the PILC press conference attended by Nairametrics. This comes as pension assets hit a record N31.32 trillion in May 2026, showing industry growth despite economic challenges.
The Commission recovered over N3 billion in unremitted pension contributions through ICPC collaboration and will partner with EFCC to ensure employer compliance. PenCom also confirmed the Pension Industry Infrastructure Fund (PIIF) is at advanced implementation stage while strengthening ties with state governments and labour unions.
Pension Fund Administrators increased Nigerian stock holdings to N5.46 trillion by March 2026 - up 38.09% from end-2025's N3.96 trillion - reflecting growing confidence in equities. With assets over N31 trillion, pensions remain Nigeria's largest long-term domestic capital pool, financing government debt and retirement security.
For RSA holders, this means potentially better returns from diversified investments but also means monitoring how PFAs allocate your funds as equity exposure grows. The PIIF launch could further boost investment options once launched.
