Peru moves to join US‑led Shield of the Americas security alliance

Peru’s Foreign Minister Carlos Espa announced on Friday that the country has begun the process of joining the Shield of the Americas, a US‑led security alliance that already includes Argentina, Ecuador and El Salvador. The alliance aims to boost intelligence sharing, joint judicial action and coordinated security operations against organised crime and drug‑trafficking networks that move cocaine across Latin America. Peru is one of the world’s largest cocaine producers, and neighbouring Colombia is also expected to join after its president‑elect takes office in August.

For Nigerians, the development matters because tighter security cooperation in South America could push cocaine traffickers to look for alternative transit routes, with West Africa—including Nigeria—remaining a key conduit for shipments bound for Europe.
