Peter Obi, the NDC presidential candidate, said on June 15, 2026 via his official social media page that Nigeria’s absence from the 2026 FIFA World Cup stems from a failure of political leadership, not a lack of talent. He pointed to the performances of Nigerian artists at the tournament and the number of Nigerians playing for other nations as proof of the country’s untapped potential.

Obi highlighted music star Davido for using his platform to draw attention to insecurity, noting that Davido appeared in a custom black leather jacket bearing the inscription "BRING THEM HOME" alongside the names of 39 schoolchildren and seven teachers reportedly abducted by bandits in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. By leveraging his international stage, Davido effectively spotlighted Nigeria’s security crisis, according to Obi.

The former Anambra governor argued that Nigeria’s security challenges require both national and international attention, but maintained that the country could still overcome its difficulties through effective leadership and deliberate efforts to create opportunities for young people. He called for greater investment in youth development and an enabling environment where talent can flourish, insisting a better and more productive Nigeria remains achievable.

What kind of leadership investments in youth, sports, and security would you support to turn Nigeria’s talent into World Cup participation and safer communities?
