Peter Obi has condemned the formation of a 59-member presidential campaign council by the OK Movement, saying he was not informed about its creation and that support groups must not act like a political party. The OK Movement, which backs Obi and his running mate Rabiu Kwankwaso for the 2027 election, unveiled the council on 17 September to mobilise support ahead of the contest. NDC leadership, led by party chairman Seriake Dickson, quickly disowned the group, insisting that support groups such as the OK Movement, Obedient Group and KwanKwasiya should only play a supporting role and not replicate party structures. Speaking on Arise News’ Prime Time on Thursday night, Obi stressed that any action by these groups requires the express approval of both himself and Kwankwaso, adding that some leaders act contrary to given directives. He warned that the OK Move’s move could destabilise the party and that the NDC will soon unveil its own official presidential campaign council. This public disagreement reveals a growing rift within the opposition coalition that could affect its unity and campaign strategy as the 2027 election approaches. Should support groups operate independently or under direct party control, and how might this shape the opposition’s chances in the upcoming vote?
