Peter Obi declares Nigeria worst place to be born on 66th Independence Day
Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, told Nigerians on October 2, 2026 that Nigeria is the worst place to be born, delivering his Independence Day address to mark the country’s 66th anniversary. He blamed the APC‑led federal government for deepening poverty, insecurity, unemployment and hunger despite promises made before the 2023 elections.
He cited data showing more than 140 million Nigerians live in poverty, over 80 million children are out of school, and about 37 young people have recently lost their lives to violence. Obi warned that roughly 40 million could face severe food shortages by the end of 2026, while youth unemployment tops 35 million and drug abuse remains among the highest globally.
These figures translate into daily hardships for families—limited access to education, healthcare, reliable safety and adequate nutrition. They also raise urgent questions about the effectiveness of current economic and security policies and what alternatives citizens might push for.
Given these realities, will you adjust your household budget to cope with rising food costs, seek additional skills or informal work to counter unemployment, support community security initiatives, or demand clearer policy explanations and accountability from your elected representatives?
