Peter Obi says 24‑hour power in 4 years impossible, aims for 10,000 MW
Peter Obi told Channels Television’s Politics Today on Sunday, July 26, 2026 that promising uninterrupted electricity for all Nigerians within a four‑year term is unrealistic because building power plants and upgrading transmission lines each take several years. Instead, he pledged to raise Nigeria’s generation, transmission and distribution capacity to at least 10,000 megawatts within four years by expanding embedded power projects modeled on Geometric Power’s operations in Aba and replicating them in industrial hubs such as Kano’s Bompai and Sharada districts. He also said the federal government must clear the trillions of naira owed to electricity generation companies—currently about ₦6.8 trillion—to restore confidence and attract investment. According to NERC’s January 2026 factsheet, Nigeria has an installed capacity of 13,625 MW but only 4,901 MW was available for dispatch (36% availability), with average consumption of 4,421 MW. The national grid collapsed twice this year, leaving about 86 million Nigerians without electricity access. Since the Electricity Act allowed states to regulate power, about 15 states have set up or are creating their own regulators, while the World Bank’s Mission 300 aims to connect 17.5 million households and private firms like WeLight have raised $31 million to expand solar mini‑grids.
