Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, condemned President Bola Tinubu’s administration on Thursday for presiding over worsening hunger despite declared agricultural interventions. In a statement on his X handle, Obi noted that Tinubu’s July 2023 food‑security emergency, the purchase of 2,000 tractors and 9,000 farming implements touted as Nigeria’s largest mechanisation programme, has not reversed the trend. He cited the Global Hunger Index showing Nigeria slipped from 103rd out of 123 countries in 2022/23 to 115th out of 123 in 2025/26, with the World Bank projecting that 33 million Nigerians could face severe hunger and the nation now having the highest number of hungry people worldwide. Obi argued that the country’s vast uncultivated northern lands could be turned into productive farms if investments were transparent, promising both food security and mass employment.

This matters because rising hunger directly erodes purchasing power, fuels malnutrition, and can trigger social unrest, affecting every household’s ability to afford basic meals. With over a quarter of the population at risk of severe food insecurity, the crisis undermines productivity, strains health systems, and threatens long‑term economic growth.

What should Nigerians consider? They can demand clearer budgeting and oversight of agricultural funds, support community‑based farming initiatives, and evaluate political promises on food security when deciding how to vote or engage with local representatives.
