Former France international Emmanuel Petit has declared England captain Harry Kane’s chances of winning the 2026 Ballon d’Or over, naming Argentina’s Lionel Messi, Spain’s Lamine Yamal and Rodri as the favourites ahead of the Bayern Munich striker. Speaking to GOAL via Mr Gamble, Petit said, "Harry Kane’s Ballon d’Or chances are over. If you base that only on the German league, no problem at all." He added that Kane "disappeared" in the Champions League and with the national team, leaving room for others. When asked who could beat Kane, Petit replied, "Yamal. He had a great World Cup. Rodri has been the best player again during this World Cup. Messi had a great competition, but he plays for Inter Miami." The Ballon d’Or winner will be announced in October.

Why does this matter? For football fans, especially those following Kane’s pursuit of football’s biggest individual honour, Petit’s assessment signals a shift in perceived frontrunners ahead of the October vote. It highlights how international tournaments and Champions League performances weigh heavily in Ballon d’Or voting, often outweighing domestic league form. For Kane, the comments underscore the pressure to deliver on the biggest stages if he hopes to revive his candidature.

What should you consider? If you were voting, would you prioritise a player’s continental and international impact over domestic league success, or do you believe consistent league performance should weigh more heavily in the Ballon d’Or race?
