Petrol jumps to ₦1,532.93/litre in April 2026 as cooking gas prices also surge nationwide
The National Bureau of Statistics reports that the average retail price for Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) rose to ₦1,532.93 per litre in April 2026, a 23.69% increase from ₦1,239.33 in April 2025 and up 18.97% from ₦1,288.54 in March 2026. Yobe recorded the highest petrol price at ₦1,599.05/litre, while Niger had the lowest at ₦1,403.89/litre.
Cooking gas prices also climbed: a 5kg cylinder averaged ₦8,706.93 in April 2026, up 13.73% month-on-month and 10.42% year-on-year. Lagos topped the 5kg cylinder price at ₦9,745.10, with Anambra lowest at ₦7,204.76. For 12.5kg cylinders, the average price reached ₦22,382.20, up 13.89% month-on-month and 10.43% year-on-year; Katsina was highest at ₦25,596.71 and Ogun lowest at ₦19,564.36.
These increases come amid persistent inflation, eroding consumers’ purchasing power and raising transportation and household costs nationwide. Transport fares have already risen following the petrol hike, affecting daily commutes and business operations.
Given these price jumps, will you adjust your travel habits, seek cheaper cooking alternatives, or cut other household expenses to cope with the higher fuel and gas costs?
