According to Channel Television, Philippine prosecutors filed criminal charges on Thursday against Senator Jose "Jinggoy" Estrada over a massive corruption scandal involving "ghost" flood control projects that cost taxpayers billions of dollars. The charges include graft and plunder—a non-bailable offense punishable by life imprisonment—for allegedly pocketing ₱573 million ($9.2 million) through illegal budgetary insertions and project allocations in fiscal year 2025.

This marks the first criminal case against a sitting lawmaker in the scandal, which President Ferdinand Marcos highlighted in a July speech. Estrada's co-respondents include former Public Works Secretary Manuel Bonoan and local engineering officials. The Office of the Ombudsman has solid evidence against Estrada and plans to pursue eight more senators under investigation, with three potentially facing charges.

The corruption scheme involves construction firms and officials pocketing funds from non-existent infrastructure projects. President's cousin Martin Romualdez (former House Speaker) is also being investigated. Estrada was previously charged in 2014 but was acquitted a decade later. Filipino taxpayers have lost billions through similar schemes, contributing to the Southeast Asian nation's poverty crisis.

With billions at stake and multiple high-profile figures under investigation, will this anti-corruption push finally break the cycle of impunity in Philippine politics or become another case of powerful figures escaping accountability?
