Pixel 9a gets Android 17 with iPhone sharing, scam call blocks—here's how to update
Android 17 is rolling out to Pixel 9a phones globally since June 11 as part of Google's June Pixel Drop. This update brings iPhone file sharing via Quick Share (requiring iPhone AirDrop set to 'Everyone for 10 Minutes'), Fake Call Detection to block spoofed calls (works only if caller uses Phone by Google), and Bubbles multitasking for floating app windows. Screen Reactions now lets you record your screen and face simultaneously.
Platform-wide Android 17 features include better privacy controls: one-time location access and Contacts Picker for sharing specific contact details. Lost device protection is stronger—Find Hub's Mark as Lost now needs biometrics plus PIN, and Remote Lock is on by default. App memory limits aim to reduce stuttering, and Live Updates show real-time data on your lock screen.
The Pixel 9a does not get Gemini Intelligence agentic AI due to its 8GB RAM and Gemini Nano v2 hardware limits—this feature remains exclusive to Pixel 10 series devices. Other excluded features are Voice Translate and Magic Cue expansion to Snapchat.
To get the update, go to Settings > System > System Update > Check for Updates. Connect to Wi-Fi first—the download is ~1.5GB. If on Android 17 Beta, opt out of the Beta Program now; the stable build is CP2A.260605.012 and won't wipe your device if done correctly.
With iPhone sharing now possible, will you use Quick Share for cross-platform transfers, or stick with WhatsApp/email for simplicity?
