Police nationwide crackdown on concealed vehicle plates June 15
Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu announced nationwide security measures Tuesday targeting vehicles with concealed registration numbers, following recent school abductions in Oyo State. The IGP will deploy Deputy Inspectors-General of Police across Nigeria's geopolitical zones starting June 15 to enhance operational coordination and accountability. Disu emphasized that unregistered or tampered plates are commonly used by kidnappers and terrorists to avoid detection, directing immediate enforcement with vehicle impoundment for violators. Police have rescued 88 kidnapping victims since March and arrested five suspected kidnappers in Abuja before planned attacks. Commissioners of police in adjacent states will implement "handshake patrols" along key routes to close jurisdictional gaps exploited by criminals. The police chief assured citizens of the force's full operational capacity working with other security agencies for safe hostage returns.
