Peter Obi condemned Nigeria’s economic growth as meaningless amid rising poverty, citing data that poverty increased from 40.1% in 2019 to 56.2% in 2023 and is projected to reach 63% in 2026. Speaking on X to mark the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, the former Anambra governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate argued that abundant human and natural resources are being wasted while millions struggle to afford food and healthcare.

Obi said progress should be measured by improvements in living standards, not GDP figures alone, and suggested declaring the day a public holiday for national reflection on the poverty crisis. He called for greater investment in education, healthcare, agriculture and small‑business support to reverse the trend, insisting poverty is not Nigeria’s destiny with competent leadership.

The statistics highlight a widening gap between macroeconomic claims and everyday reality for many Nigerians. With poverty expected to affect nearly two‑thirds of the population by next year, households face tougher choices on spending, health and education. What steps will you take to protect your livelihood or support community efforts aimed at reducing poverty?
