Power Minister Tegbe meets DisCos on 24/7 Energy Zones for Lagos, Abuja-Kano, Enugu-PH corridors
Power Minister Joseph Tegbe held a closed-door meeting with electricity distribution companies (DisCos) on Tuesday to advance the Federal Government's 24/7 Energy Zones initiative targeting stable 24-hour power supply in Nigeria's highest-demand economic corridors. The proposed zones specifically cover the Lagos axis, Abuja-Kaduna-Kano, and Enugu-Port Harcourt regions where commercial and industrial demand is concentrated. Tegbe emphasized the initiative aims to close the gap between power supply and distribution uptake, unlock economic activity in these zones, and strengthen DisCos' revenue collection mechanisms through improved infrastructure. The minister stated that sector constraints extend beyond generation and transmission to include how effectively power is delivered at the distribution end, framing the Energy Zones as critical for matching supply with growing economy demands. Attendance included leadership from Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), Ikeja Electric, Eko Power Ltd., Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), and Sahara Energy Group. Tegbe reiterated the Federal Government's commitment to building infrastructure in these high-demand areas to ensure supply keeps pace with estimated economic growth, positioning the zones as a strategic intervention for reliable electricity access. The meeting follows ongoing concerns about inconsistent power supply affecting businesses and households nationwide, particularly in urban centers driving Nigeria's economic output. With implementation details still emerging from these closed-door discussions, stakeholders await clarity on timelines, funding mechanisms, and specific infrastructure upgrades planned for each designated zone. Will the 24/7 Energy Zones finally deliver consistent power to Nigeria's economic engines, or will implementation challenges mirror past power sector reforms that failed to reach consumers?
