Premier League clubs spend €2.7bn on transfers, outpacing Europe’s big leagues
Premier League clubs have spent over €2.7 billion on player transfers this summer, exceeding the combined €2.3 billion spent by La Liga, Bundesliga and Serie A clubs. Chelsea led with €408 million, including a €138 million deal for Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa. Manchester City spent €135 million for Elliot Anderson, Arsenal paid €87 million for Bruno Guimarães, and Tottenham Hotspur followed with €267 million in spending. At the same point last year, Premier League outlay was €2.6 billion, marking a 3.8% year‑on‑year increase.
The spending surge reflects the league’s financial strength from lucrative broadcast deals, commercial partnerships and growing investor interest. Deloitte projects Premier League revenue of £7.4 billion (about $10 billion) this season. However, Football Benchmark data cited by the Financial Times shows Premier League clubs have not collectively reported a profit since the 2017/18 season, as much of the extra income is immediately reinvested into transfer fees and player wages.
