Premium Times yesterday published a column by Max Nwabueze Amuchie detailing strict ethical rules for researchers who go undercover ('go deep') in Nigerian communities. The Sundiata Post Knowledge Lab (SPKL) framework requires three non-negotiable obligations: maintaining a disciplined persona close to real experience, designing an exit plan before entry, and ethically justifying the deception—proving it's necessary, proportional, protective, and accountable. Researchers must use the Tri-Tiered Approach first (remote tracking, then rapid intercept) before considering immersion, and ensure knowledge gained justifies deception given community vulnerability. For hard cases: if witnessing crime, life-saving action overrides persona; if exposed, researchers withdraw while protecting contacts; if disclosure risks communities, methods are fully shared but identities and traceable details altered. Crucially, observed communities must never bear foreseeable harm like reprisal or lost livelihood from findings, and researchers deserve fair pay, training, and penalty-free withdrawal options. SPKL will publish its full field ethics protocol including legal review and panel terms for public scrutiny. How would you apply these four tests—necessity, proportionality, protection, accountability—before starting sensitive fieldwork in your community?
