Presidency says Tinubu can govern Nigeria from anywhere amid vacation concerns
The Presidency said on Sunday that President Bola Tinubu can govern Nigeria from anywhere and does not need to be physically present in Abuja to perform his duties. Special Adviser Bayo Onanuga stated Tinubu is hale and hearty, on a working vacation after exhausting his official three-week leave, and has been meeting investors in France, most recently facilitating a $7 billion deep-sea port project in Ogun Waterside, Ogun State.
The statement came amid growing concern from Nigerians and opposition figures over Tinubu's prolonged absence; he was expected to return to the country last week but has not done so. Critics argue the President's whereabouts should be transparent, while the Presidency insists his remote work shows he remains fully engaged in governance.
This situation raises questions about the balance between modern digital leadership and traditional expectations of a president's physical presence, as well as the accountability of executive officials during extended periods abroad. Will you accept a president governing remotely, or do you insist on transparency about his location and return date?
