Prestige Assurance Plc announced a profit after tax of N1.05 billion for the six months ended June 30 2026, more than double the N519.6 million earned a year earlier, even though gross premium written fell 16% to N12.83 billion. The jump was driven by a sharp improvement in underwriting: insurance service expenses fell 26% to N8.11 billion, pushing the insurance service result from N18.28 million to N1.09 billion—a 5,852% rise. Investment income slipped 24% to N1.25 billion, and reinsurance costs rose 143% to N3.35 billion, but the underwriting gain more than offset those drags. Net assets rose 5% to N21.32 billion, while the share price closed at N1.50 on July 29, down 10% from six months prior.

For investors and policyholders, the result shows the company can boost profitability through tighter risk selection and cost control, even when top‑line growth stalls. The sharp rise in reinsurance spend reflects a deliberate move to protect its aviation, marine and oil‑gas book, suggesting management is prioritising stability over rapid premium growth.

Would you weigh the strong underwriting turnaround against the falling premium and share price when deciding whether to hold, buy or wait for clearer market confidence in Prestige Assurance?
