Father Michael Umoh told PREMIUM TIMES that Good Friday and Easter are the “most important days” in the Christian faith, representing the core of Christian belief through Christ's death and resurrection. He explained these days form the Triduum—from Holy Thursday to Easter Sunday—when Christians reflect on foundational mysteries: ‘Without them, there cannot be Easter, and consequently there cannot be Christianity.’ The priest emphasized that Good Friday shows ultimate obedience and sacrifice, as Jesus submitted to God's will for humanity's salvation. Even Christmas, he noted, derives meaning from this sacrifice.

Umoh drew direct lessons for Nigerian society, stressing selflessness and humility as key takeaways. He warned that growing materialism and selfishness undermine progress, saying people are ‘ready to do anything—even harm others—for wealth.’ He urged those in authority to prioritize the common good, citing former Lagos governor Lateef Jakande as an example of impactful, modest leadership. The cleric reminded that life is transient; wealth and power ultimately pale compared to the good one does for others.

As Nigeria grapples with economic hardship and governance issues, Umoh called on citizens to use Easter for introspection: ‘What is God’s purpose for my life?’ He argued that true peace comes not from accumulating riches but from the positive impact on others. Will Nigerians embrace this call to serve rather than amass?
