Professor Adamu Gwarzo named Chancellor of Hausa Community in Europe at Paris cultural event
Professor Adamu Gwarzo, founder of Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria Group, has been appointed Chancellor of the Hausa Community in Europe. The honor was announced by Sarkin Hausawan Turai, Surajo Jankado during the 2026 International Hausa Day celebration in Paris on Sunday, aligning with the annual August 26 observance that promotes Hausa language and culture worldwide.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf commended the appointment, highlighting Gwarzo's dedication to Hausa language preservation, cultural identity, and community development across Nigeria and the diaspora. His work includes higher education institution-building and philanthropy through his foundation, which has funded scholarships and donated $100,000 to Uganda's Islamic University in 2024.
This recognition adds a cultural leadership role to Gwarzo's profile, potentially strengthening ties between Hausa communities in Europe and their counterparts in Nigeria and beyond. The 2026 celebration's theme 'Our Culture, Our Future' focused on safeguarding Hausa heritage for future generations, drawing participation from over 30 countries.
For Nigerians engaged in cultural preservation or diaspora connections, this appointment illustrates how individual efforts to uphold heritage can achieve international recognition. It also reinforces the significance of Hausa language and culture as foundational to African identity, as emphasized by Governor Yusuf during the Paris event.
