Severe rainstorm on Friday damaged sections of Awolowo and Isa Kaita female hostels at University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), with hostel roofs blown off and students' bed spaces affected. Over 20 students have been relocated to other campus hostels after the incident.

Affected students reported damage to personal belongings including mattresses, clothes, and books. The storm also caused uprooted trees and fallen branches across some campus roads, temporarily obstructing movement.

UNN Vice-chancellor Prof. Simon Ortuanya directed immediate relocation of affected students, with the Dean of Students Affairs confirming all impacted students have been moved to alternative accommodation. No casualties were reported, though significant damage to university facilities and infrastructure occurred.

With Nigeria's rainy season intensifying, what emergency preparedness measures should universities implement to protect student housing during severe weather events?
