Real Madrid Suffers Double Blow as Militao, Guler Ruled Out for Season
Real Madrid's faint hopes of overtaking Barcelona in La Liga suffered a major blow on Thursday, with key players Eder Militao and Arda Guler both ruled out for the rest of the season. Brazilian defender Militao has a left thigh injury, while Turkish attacking midfielder Guler is sidelined with a right thigh problem, the club confirmed.
Both players will miss several weeks of action, including the crucial Clasico against Barcelona on May 10 and the final six matches of the season. Real Madrid currently trail defending champions Barcelona by nine points in the title race, with the championship representing their only chance of major silverware this term.
Good news for both players and their national teams: neither Militao (28) nor 21-year-old Guler is considered at risk of missing the World Cup finals, which run from June 11 to July 19 in Canada, Mexico and the United States. Meanwhile, Barcelona's Lamine Yamal also received medical attention during their match against RC Celta de Vigo on April 22, though the extent of his injury hasn't been fully disclosed yet.
Will Real Madrid's depleted squad be able to mount a comeback against their rivals, or will Barcelona extend their lead in the upcoming Clasico?
