Reno Omokri Calls Late Olu Jacobs a National Icon Who Pioneered Nigerian Film

On September 16, 2026, Nigeria’s Ambassador-designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, announced the death of veteran actor Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, at age 84. Omokri described Jacobs as a national icon whose pioneering career on the international stage broke barriers long before Nollywood became a global phenomenon, noting his training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London and appearances in British series such as The Professionals.

He emphasized that Jacobs, alongside his mentor Chief Hubert Ogunde, laid the foundation for today’s Nigerian film industry, inspiring generations of actors and bringing pride to Nigeria through global performances. Omokri also highlighted Jacobs’ humility, saying his extensive body of work speaks for itself despite less deserving individuals claiming the title of Nollywood pioneer.

Omokri extended condolences to Jacobs’ family, especially his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, and their children, praying for God’s comfort during this loss.

What lessons can emerging actors take from Jacobs’ blend of international excellence and modesty as they shape the future of Nigerian cinema?
