Ronaldo claims Portugal coach Jesus broke promises twice, led to national team exit
Cristiano Ronaldo revealed in an Instagram statement earlier this week that Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus broke promises made to him on two separate occasions, prompting his departure from the national team camp. The 41-year-old captain explained he had initially planned to retire after the 2026 World Cup but was persuaded to stay by federation president Pedro Proença, whom he supported in appointing Jesus as coach. Ronaldo said Jesus personally assured him he would play both the opening and final matches of the international window as part of a physical management plan involving three to four substitutions per game.
However, Ronaldo claims Jesus first deviated from this plan by asking if he could play just 30 minutes against Norway despite prior agreement his next appearance would be against Denmark. After warming up from halftime and not being introduced, Ronaldo stated Jesus had 'broken his word.' A subsequent private meeting with Jesus and Al Nassr sporting director Simão Coutinho produced an agreement for Jesus to clarify the incident publicly, but Ronaldo says the coach's press conference failed to reflect what was agreed—calling it 'the second time he was breaking the word he had given me.' Ronaldo then left camp rather than risk further broken promises.
Ronaldo accepted responsibility for not greeting fans after the Norway match and acknowledged his walkout should have consequences, insisting rules apply equally regardless of his status. However, he emphasized his desire to continue representing Portugal remains strong, stating he'll be available to compete after any suspension if physically fit. This situation highlights how trust and communication breakdowns between star players and coaches can derail national team commitments, even amid ongoing World Cup preparations.
