Ruby Igwe: From Early Internships to ALX Africa Leadership
Ruby Igwe, Regional Director for West and Central Africa at ALX Africa, reflects that she wouldn't change anything about her life's journey. "Everything I've done has gotten me to where I am," she states. "I really am happy where I have gotten to."
Starting internships in 2009 while still in secondary school, Igwe demonstrated foresight by working in law firms before studying Law at University of Kent. Even after leaving Nigeria for A-Levels in 2011, she returned during summer holidays to intern at Efere Ozako & Associates and later StreamSowers and Köhn.
Her thorough approach to career planning—"I've always liked to be thorough. So, if I was going to do something and make it my career, I wanted to understand it"—helped her gain practical insights. These early professional experiences taught her structure that formed a blueprint for her career path.
Igwe's journey shows the value of early career exploration and consistent commitment to professional development, even when it means returning home during holidays. Her story suggests that thorough understanding and practical experience can be as valuable as formal education in building a successful career trajectory.
