Russia, BRICS member states and partner countries have confirmed they will coordinate closely ahead of the election for the 10th UN Secretary-General. Moscow’s Director of International Organisations, Kirill Logvinov, met with allies to outline the criteria Russia uses: the next UN chief must uphold the UN Charter, act impartially, promote a unifying agenda and counter the dominance of Western officials in the Secretariat. The candidates named include former Senegal President Macky Sall, former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, IAEA chief Rafael Grossi, UN Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict Virginia Gamba, and UN Trade and Development Secretary-General Rebeca Grynspan. Interactive dialogues with the nominees begin at the UN General Assembly on April 21, with a final decision expected by late 2026, when António Guterres’ second term ends on December 31.

For Nigerians, the outcome matters because the UN Secretary-General shapes global peacekeeping, development aid and climate policy—areas where Nigeria contributes troops and receives support. An African leader at the helm could bring greater attention to continental conflicts, influence funding for missions in which Nigeria participates, and affect UN reforms that impact Nigeria’s voice in world affairs. It also reflects broader efforts by the Global South to increase representation in top UN posts.

Keep an eye on the April 21 dialogues and subsequent updates through UN channels or reliable news sources. While there is no immediate action for individuals, understanding how the UN’s leadership aligns with Nigeria’s interests helps inform conversations about Africa’s role in global governance and the country’s foreign policy priorities.
