Russian missiles and drones struck Ukraine's energy infrastructure overnight Saturday into Sunday, leaving more than 600,000 residents in Dnipropetrovsk region and nearly 250,000 customers in Kharkiv region without electricity, according to power company DTEK and Kharkiv mayor Mykola Baksheyev. DTEK said restoration is "complicated by repeated attacks" while Baksheyev noted the timeline for power return remains unknown.

The strikes follow Friday's massive barrage that plunged five regions into darkness and disrupted transmission in Kyiv. President Zelensky says Russia is intensifying attacks to pressure Ukraine ahead of US-brokered trilateral talks in Abu Dhabi scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday. This marks the fourth wartime winter since Russia's 2022 invasion, with temperatures already near freezing.

For Nigerians, the conflict continues to influence global energy markets and grain supply chains—Ukraine remains a major wheat exporter to Africa. Previous escalations have correlated with fuel price volatility and food inflation pressures domestically. The Abu Dhabi talks could signal diplomatic shifts affecting sanctions regimes and export corridors.

Will the Abu Dhabi talks produce a credible energy infrastructure protection agreement, or is this another diplomatic pause before winter escalation?
