South Africa's tech employers now prioritize demonstrable skills over degrees, with graduate unemployment at 12.4% and critical shortages in software development, networking, and cybersecurity. As Amogelang Chaane showed—landing an AWS role pre-graduation by building apps, doing unpaid internships, and hackathon projects—a qualification alone isn't enough; candidates need GitHub repos or live apps to prove capability.

Institutions like Richfield are responding by partnering with AWS, IBM, and others to integrate vendor-certified courses (cloud computing, data analytics) and mandatory hackathons where teams build real-world solutions like the Richfield Connect platform. Their curriculum now includes AI fundamentals and Work-Integrated Learning modules to simulate workplace demands.

For students, the imperative is clear: start building early. Whether through personal projects, campus hackathons, or contributing to open source, tangible proof of execution—like resolving production bugs under deadline—has become the key differentiator in SA's competitive tech job market, where degrees merely open doors but don't guarantee entry.
