Sadiq Umar pushes for VAR and better referee welfare in NPFL
Super Eagles forward Sadiq Umar has called for the introduction of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology and improved welfare for match officials in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL). Speaking to the media on June 23, 2026, Umar said modern technology and better incentives for referees are essential to raise the league's standards, reduce controversial decisions, and rebuild confidence among clubs and fans. He noted that officiating has been a recurring controversy in recent NPFL seasons, with frequent criticism from players, coaches and supporters over perceived poor decisions. Umar believes that equipping referees with VAR and offering proper remuneration and training will minimise errors and promote professionalism across the league. His remarks come amid ongoing debates about the quality of refereeing in Nigeria's top division, which have occasionally overshadowed on-field performances. While the Nigeria Football Federation has yet to announce any VAR rollout, Umar's advocacy adds player-voice pressure for reform. Improving officiating could enhance match fairness, attract sponsorship, and improve the viewing experience for fans nationwide.
