Sumner Sambo, Director of News and Politics at Arise News, said opposition political parties in Nigeria lack ideology and are being exploited by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections. Speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Thursday, Sambo told opposition leaders such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s Peter Obi that they must work harder to challenge APC rather than expect a peaceful handover of power.

He argued that opposition parties have no clear, detailed manifestos and urged their presidential candidates to present robust policies tackling the high cost of governance, the education crisis, and uneven infrastructure distribution. "The APC has seen a laxity in opposition political parties. They lack ideology, and the APC is exploiting them," Sambo said. He added that without an overriding ideology, elected representatives cannot be trusted to resist inducements.

The commentary highlights concerns about the strength of Nigeria’s opposition as the country prepares for another election cycle. It raises questions about whether voters will have meaningful choices based on policy rather than personality, and whether opposition parties can develop the ideological grounding needed to offer a credible alternative to APC’s rule.
