Saudi Arabia completes annual Kiswa replacement for Holy Kaaba in Makkah
Saudi Arabia has finished the annual replacement of the Holy Kaaba’s Kiswa, the black silk covering Islam’s most sacred site in Makkah. The ceremony, overseen by the General Authority for the Care of the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque through the King Abdulaziz Complex for the Holy Kaaba Kiswa, followed a meticulous seven-stage process: dyeing, weaving, testing, printing, embroidery, hand weaving, and final assembly. Materials used included 825 kilograms of natural silk, 47 rolls of black silk for the outer covering, 400 kilograms of raw cotton for the inner lining, and 180 kilograms of precious metals—60 kg of pure silver and 120 kg of gold-plated silver threads—for embroidering Quranic verses and Islamic motifs. Saudi experts removed gold‑embroidered ornaments, decorative lamps, and other embellishments from the old Kiswa before lowering the door curtain, then transported the new covering to the Grand Mosque under internationally coordinated standards.
