Security Expert: Nigeria Has Gains But Still Not Fully Secure
Retired Army Captain and IHRC Director Abdullahi Bokaji Adamu confirms Nigeria has recorded security improvements but the country cannot yet be described as fully secure. Both President Tinubu's statement about improving conditions and Adamu's assessment about remaining challenges can coexist simultaneously.
Key improvements noted: Increased military/police presence on kidnapping-prone highways, neutralized terrorist/bandit leaders, and relative stability in previously inaccessible communities. However, serious challenges persist: kidnappings for ransom continue in North-West and North-Central regions, rural communities report ongoing attacks, and farmers/herders/travellers remain threatened nationwide.
Security agencies possess intelligence capabilities to locate bandit camps, routes, financiers and collaborators, but completely ending banditry requires comprehensive solutions beyond military action. Adamu emphasizes that tackling insecurity needs stronger political will, better intelligence coordination, improved accountability, sustained operations, disruption of funding networks, stopping arms supplies, protecting vulnerable communities, and addressing social/economic conditions that fuel recruitment. The key issue: security improvements are uneven and vary from state to state.
