Senate approves bills to boost judges in Federal High Court, Court of Appeal
The Senate passed for second reading bills to increase Federal High Court judges from 70 to 90 and Court of Appeal Justices from 70 to 110, sponsored by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele. The measures aim to decongest courts and accelerate justice delivery nationwide.
According to Bamidele, expanding these courts will reduce case backlogs, speed up corruption and financial crime trials, improve commercial dispute resolution for investors, and strengthen adjudication in banking, telecoms, maritime, aviation and intellectual property sectors. The bills faced no opposition in plenary.
Now with the Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters Committee, the bills have four weeks for review before returning to Senate. With faster courts expected, will you pursue legal remedies sooner for disputes, or do you doubt this will actually reduce delays?
