Senate extends 2025 budget capital implementation to end of 2026 nationwide
The Senate has approved another extension of the implementation period for the capital component of the 2025 Appropriation Act, moving the deadline from September 30, 2026 to December 31, 2026. The decision was reached on Tuesday after senators considered and passed the amendment bill clause by clause. The bill was sponsored by Senate Leader Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, representing Ekiti Central Senatorial District.
Bamidele said the extension was necessary and practical, noting that execution of capital projects contained in the 2025 Appropriation Act had yet to reach the desired level despite the release of approximately the allocated funds to ministries, departments and agencies. He presented the measure as "A Bill for an Act to Amend the Appropriations (Repeal & Enactment) Act 2025 to Extend the Implementation of the Capital Aspect of the Appropriations (Repeal & Enactment) Act 2025 from 30th September, 2026 to 31st December, 2026 (SB. 1067)."
This extension affects all federal ministries, departments and agencies tasked with delivering infrastructure and other capital projects funded in the 2025 budget. Contractors and project managers now have an additional three months to complete works, while citizens may experience delayed delivery of roads, buildings, and other public works. With funds already released, the focus shifts to ensuring actual project completion rather than further delays.
Will this extra three months translate into finished projects and visible infrastructure across Nigeria, or will it simply postpone the same implementation challenges? Citizens can track specific projects in their localities and demand accountability for year-end delivery.
