Nigerian Senators voted Tuesday to push the deadline for spending the 2025 capital budget from 30 September to 31 December 2026, marking the fourth time lawmakers have extended the implementation period. The House of Representatives had already approved the same extension earlier in the day, after the bill was read three times and passed by voice vote under Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

The move means the capital slice of the 2025 budget will stay open until the end of 2026, despite President Bola Tinubu’s promise in October 2025 and again in December 2025 to terminate overlapping budgets by 31 March 2026. Economic analysts and lawmakers have repeatedly criticised the pattern, saying it reflects weak fiscal planning and risks leaving public projects half‑finished or abandoned.

What does this mean for you? With the budget now straddling three fiscal years, expect possible delays in road, power and water projects funded under the 2025 allocation, and continued uncertainty about when new budgets will truly take effect. Will you demand stricter adherence to budget timelines from your representatives, or accept repeated extensions as the new normal?
