The Nigerian Senate has paused consideration of the Electoral Act, 2022 (Repeal and Re-Enactment) Bill 2026 after raising concerns about scheduling the 2027 general elections during Ramadan. Lawmakers are reviewing technical inconsistencies in the legislation, including Clause 28's 360-day election notice requirement that could conflict with Ramadan timing. The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, halted proceedings when Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe raised a point of order regarding Clause 60. Stakeholders argue holding elections during Ramadan could reduce voter turnout and logistical challenges. The bill also contains cross-referencing errors in clauses 6, 9, 10, 22, 23, 28, 29, 32, 42, 47, 51, 60, 62, 64, 65, 73, 77, 86, 87, 89, 93, and 143. The motion to rescind the bill, moved by Senate leader Opeyemi Bamidele, seeks to address these issues before finalizing the legislation.
