Senate shortens INEC election notice period to 180 days
The Senate on Tuesday reduced the time INEC has to publish election notices from 360 to 180 days, amending Clause 28 of the Electoral Act. The upper chamber also fixed errors in 22 clauses, including making electronic result transmission mandatory. Presidential and National Assembly elections may now occur in December 2026 or January 2027. Lawmakers moved to adjust dates after Muslim groups raised concerns about the February 2027 election clashing with Ramadan, which could impact voter turnout and logistics. The Senate granted INEC authority to reschedule elections to avoid the fasting period.
