Senate stalls Electoral Act review over 2027 election timetable conflict
Senate proceedings on the Electoral Act, 2022 (Repeal and Re-Enactment) Bill 2026 were halted when Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe raised a point of order at Clause 60. The motion to rescind the bill, formally seconded on Tuesday, led to a closed-door session amid concerns about the 2027 election timetable conflicting with the 360-day notice requirement in Clause 28. Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele stated the INEC-proposed February 2027 date could violate the law by scheduling elections during Ramadan. The bill is now being reconsidered in the Committee of the Whole.
