Senegalese president Bassirou Diomaye Faye dismissed prime minister Ousmane Sonko on May 22, 2026, dissolving their government alliance that had previously worked together to overthrow former president Macky Sall. The once-unified duo, who had maintained a "Sonko is Diomaye" unity slogan since January 2024, now faces deep internal divisions that culminated in the dismissal.

The split represents significant political instability for Senegal, which is already battling an economic crisis. The alliance had been built on political complementarity - Sonko providing popular legitimacy while Faye managed the state apparatus. However, constitutional tensions between the presidential and prime minister roles created inevitable power struggles. After his dismissal, Sonko quickly became speaker of parliament, moving to an opposition role.

Political scientist Toumani Traoré from Université Cheikh Anta Diop de Dakar warns this signals potential turmoil ahead. The situation mirrors classic "number two syndrome" where allies become rivals as they gain influence. The shift from "Sonko is Diomaye" to "Sonko is Sonko" and "Ousmane is Sonko" slogans reflects the reality that both leaders ultimately seek power and leadership, making conflict inevitable in Senegal's presidential system. This could destabilize the ruling party and signal renewed social and political upheaval.
