Seplat Energy names Tony Elumelu chairman Jan 2027, Effiong Okon CEO Aug 2026
Seplat Energy announced on Tuesday that its founder and Heirs Holdings chairman Tony Elumelu will become the company's next chairman effective January 1, 2027, succeeding independent chairman Udoma Udo Udoma who retires December 31, 2026. At the same time, current CEO Roger Brown will hand over to industry veteran Effiong Okon as CEO effective August 1, 2026. Elumelu, whose Heirs Holdings holds a 20.07% stake in Seplat, said he is honoured to take the role and highlighted indigenous energy companies' part in driving Nigeria's economic transformation. Okon brings 35 years of global experience, including past leadership at Royal Dutch Shell, providing technical depth to complement Elumelu's financial strategy. The leadership shift moves Seplat from independent governance to major-shareholder control, aligning with its vertical gas-to-power ambitions after achieving first gas at the ANOH plant in January. Analysts say the dual appointment balances financial and operational expertise, supporting Seplat's long-term growth strategy and its goal to meet London Stock Exchange ESG standards while addressing domestic energy security needs. Investors should monitor whether the new leadership delivers on Seplat's 2030 growth plan and translates expanded assets into higher dividends.
