SERAP asks CBN to explain $6.23m missing Buhari election fund in seven days
SERAP has given the Central Bank of Nigeria seven days to account for $6.23 million allegedly linked to an election funding request by former President Muhammadu Buhari, and over N1.63 trillion in missing public funds. The demand, in a letter dated September 26, 2026 signed by Deputy Director Kolawole Oluwadare, cites the Auditor‑General’s 2023 report released on August 7, 2026, which disclosed N1.25 trillion in unrecovered intervention loans to state governments, N116.18 billion in loans to distressed and liquidated banks, and N262.86 billion distributed under the Anchor Borrowers Programme. SERAP wants CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso to publish the names of beneficiaries, amounts received, how the funds were used, and a recovery plan for each category, plus an internal investigation report on the $6.23 million election money, identifying responsibility and recovery steps.
