Sheikh Gumi urges government to fund mass marriages in Shariah states

Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, speaking on his Facebook page on August 14, 2026, said governments in states operating under Shariah law have a duty to use public funds to support marriage arrangements for those who cannot afford them. He argued that where prostitution, fornication, adultery and promiscuity are prohibited by both religious principles and state laws, using public resources to facilitate marriage for women in excess of the eligible male pool or any young person in dire need is a legitimate component of good governance. The Islamic cleric framed the intervention as addressing social needs arising from the ban on sexual relationships outside marriage. He noted that such assistance should be viewed as responsible governance, especially in northern Nigerian states where Shariah applies.
