Shettima Leads Nigeria’s Delegation at BRICS Summit 2026 in New Delhi

Vice President Kashim Shettima is leading Nigeria’s delegation to the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, which opened Saturday with a closed-door session on “Inclusive Global Governance and Strengthening Multilateralism” for core members. Shettima arrived Friday alongside Ministers Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu (Foreign Affairs), Jumoke Oduwole (Industry, Trade and Investment) and Bosun Tijani (Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy). The summit, themed “Building For Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability”, runs amid heightened Iran‑United States and Russia‑Ukraine tensions that test the bloc’s unity.

Nigeria became a BRICS partner country in January 2025 and uses the platform to deepen South‑South cooperation, boost trade, investment, agriculture, technology and industrial development with major emerging economies. Security in Delhi is tight: about 30,000 personnel, including 15,000 police, have been deployed, 35 major routes barricaded, government offices and schools closed Friday, and anti‑drone systems installed around hotels hosting leaders.

At the summit, Shettima will join high‑level talks on inclusive growth, resilience, innovation and sustainable development, and hold bilateral engagements to advance Nigeria’s economic and diplomatic interests.
