Simi Criticized After Mirabel Admits Faking Rape Claim
Nigerian singer Simi faced online backlash after TikToker Mirabel confessed her widely shared rape allegation was fabricated. The controversy began February 18 when Mirabel posted a video claiming she was raped and injured with a blade at home. While many Nigerians initially believed her story and condemned the alleged act, others questioned inconsistencies in the video, accusing her of seeking attention. Simi later spoke against rape culture on X, urging men to hold other men accountable and questioning why people felt triggered when rapists were called out. This drew criticism for ignoring false accusations, intensified when an old 2016 tweet was misinterpreted as sexual innuendo. A fake apology meme circulated mocking Simi, who was nicknamed "Ikorodu Celine Dion." Simi maintained that false claims shouldn't silence genuine victims, stating almost every woman she knew had experienced assault. The situation shifted when activist VeryDarkMan revealed Mirabel admitted the claim was false during a phone call. Mirabel, an 18-year-old orphan and lesbian struggling with addiction and self-harm, pleaded for help. VeryDarkMan urged forgiveness and mental health awareness, arranging rehabilitation. The case was transferred to Ogun State for investigation. The incident reignited debates about sexual violence, false allegations, accountability, and mental health in viral social media cases.
