Two Manchester United legends, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick, are locked in a two-way battle to become interim manager until the end of the season. According to Daily Mail, United's chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox spoke to both candidates on Tuesday, but a final decision requires a physical meeting first.

For Wednesday night's Premier League clash at Burnley, another former United midfielder Darren Fletcher will take charge temporarily. Ruud van Nistelrooy is reportedly no longer under consideration.

Solskjaer originally replaced Jose Mourinho in December 2018 and remained manager for nearly three years. Carrick previously served as caretaker for three games when Solskjaer was sacked in November 2021. With Amorim sacked after a poor run of results, United appear to be turning to familiar faces to steady the ship through season's end.
