South Africa defender Ime Okon has dismissed claims that Nigeria attempted to recruit him, reaffirming his commitment to Bafana Bafana despite qualifying for both nations. The 22-year-old Hannover centre-back played the full 90 minutes in South Africa's 1-1 draw with Czech Republic at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, helping keep their Group A hopes alive. Okon stated his decision was rooted in identity rather than football opportunity, saying 'South Africa is my home' and 'I have played for South Africa in the COSAFA games and I scored.' He emphasized no serious approach came from the Nigeria Football Federation. This comes as Nigeria faces another World Cup disappointment, missing the 2026 tournament after losing to DR Congo on penalties. This marks the first time since 1994 that the Super Eagles have failed to qualify for back-to-back World Cups, highlighting ongoing challenges in Nigerian football development. While Okon continues representing South Africa, Nigerian fans must wait for 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers to see their team return to major competition.
