Sowore claims Atiku offers Nigerians nothing ahead of 2027 polls
Human rights activist and African Action Congress presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore said on his verified X handle that African Democratic Congress presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has nothing to offer Nigerians. Sowore made the statement on Sunday, August 22, 2026, as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections.
He accused Atiku of being part of Nigeria’s political establishment since the 1980s, noting that despite serving as vice president for eight years and overseeing huge investments in the power sector, millions still lack electricity. Sowore asked what fundamentally different future Atiku could offer after decades at the centre of power, answering: "Nothing!".
Sowore also dismissed Atiku’s recent pledge to restore the fuel subsidy removed by President Bola Tinubu’s administration, calling it an outright deception aimed at winning votes. He argued Nigeria needs a clean break from the elite that has produced poverty, corruption, insecurity and darkness, rather than another recycling of the same leaders.
The commentary adds to the growing debate over whether Nigeria’s 2027 election will bring fresh leadership or continue the cycle of established politicians. Voters now face a choice between Atiku’s experience and promises of subsidy restoration, and Sowore’s call for a new political direction untainted by past failures.
Will you support a candidate promising to bring back fuel subsidies, or do you agree with Sowore that Nigeria requires a complete break from its current political elite?
