Spain pushes EU to end Israel pact over international law violations
Spain is pressing the European Union to terminate its Association Agreement with Israel, with formal proposal set for submission this week. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez made the announcement at a pre-campaign rally Sunday, declaring that a government "violating international law and EU principles" cannot be a partner.
The Spanish leader emphasized Spain has no issue with Israeli people but strongly opposes its government's military operations in Gaza and Lebanon. Sánchez has consistently criticized Prime Minister Netanyahu's government for what he calls excessive force, while Israel continued destruction in southern Lebanon over the weekend with Merkava battle tank deployments.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan accused Israel of attempting to create a "fait accompli" situation in Lebanon and noted Muslim countries are concerned about Israel's "recent expansionist and aggressive policies" in the region. Fidan also stated many believe Israel's alleged aim of depopulating Gaza—whether by killing or forced displacement—remains unchanged.
What stance should Nigeria take on this EU decision regarding Israel, especially considering our own position on international law and Middle East conflicts?
